Northern Elm Column Support with Carved Base #2
Probably one of the rarest and most unusual items I have ever offered for sale. These bases each have an insert of hard wood in their center to provide additional strength to the support base. Chinese houses are constructed frequently using interior posts. As the floors are prone to absorb moisture, bases were used to keep the resultant moisture from rotting out the post. Frequently these bases were made of stone; less frequently wood. These bases are unusual is that they have four corner feet. The feet that would show under the post were carved. Wonderful today as stands for house plants, they are a reminder of the care and work that went into creating even the most utilitarian objects. Mid 19th century.
