Bench With Bamboo Top

Bamboo top is replaced. First quarter of the 20th century.

This apparently simple bench has construction details that go back hundreds of years in the history of Chinese Furniture.  First, just look at the bench.  Yes, it is simple, but it has some wonderful style elements that raise it above the ordinary.  Note it has a "picture frame molding" around the replaced rattan top. There is a carved waist below the top.  The legs are joined by a humpback stretcher, and the feet have the traditional "cuffs" so frequently found in Ming and Qing furniture.  Obviously it has been refinished,  and is simultaneously simple and elegant in a very refined, understated way.
