Ju Wood Bench with Replaced Rattan Seat

This southern elm (Ju) wood bench with replaced rattan seat is not waisted.  Note that the legs are connected directly to the top. Early bench and table furniture is found both with a waist and without. There is no preferential view to either waisted or not waisted furniture. They are just different styles. What makes this bench particularly interesting are the carved aprons suggesting a medial stretcher, but with much more highly carved middle and leg aprons than the typical stretcher. Please note also the carved "coins" symbolizing wealth. The bench dates from the 2nd quarter of the 20th century, and originated in Zhejiang province.
