Ju Wood Bench
Ju wood is Southern Elm. Some collectors prefer it to Northern Elm, although to tell the truth, I have a hard time differentiating between the two kinds of wood. This bench has many of the same wonderful construction and style elements of much earlier benches. Note the picture frame molding on the top, the waist between the top and the legs, the humpback stretcher, and the struts connecting the stretcher to the top. Some of these struts are more highly carved than the simple post type strut. Note also the cuffed feet on the legs, and the slight beading on the legs and the waist.
This bench dates from the 2nd quarter of the 20th century, and originated in Zhejiang province.
