First Elm Chest
I love this chest. Why? First of all it is made of beautifully grained elm. Refinished elm looks terrific, and in this chest you get a full wide appreciation of that fact. This chest was made in Hebei province sometime in the first quarter of the 20th century. I think I like it so much because of the slight suggestion of a carved stretcher below the apron of the chest. That little carving lifts the chest from just being a good looking box into one a bit more sophisticated. The chest has the usual age related repairs. Nothing can hide its simple beauty.
