Painted Chest with Two Drawers
This poplar chest has had its bottom drawers made from the original panel. In other words, the original panel now becomes the drawer front, and the drawer interior are completely new. Made in Inner Mongolia sometime in the second quarter of the 20th century, it has mostly original paint. Please notice the calligraphy on the doors. Figuratively translated, the door on the left reads, "The pond is full of lotus flowers," and the door on the right reads "May you be rich all your life." The lotus is a symbol of uprightness and progeny. This chest is another example of pure Chinese country painted furniture. The chest can be used anywhere in a house or office, and is great for storage.
