Painted Chest
If you consider yourself a "purist," this piece should make you sit up and take notice. This painted chest is just the way it was found in China save that it has been over coated to preserve what is left of the original paint. This elm chest made in Shanxi Province in the last quarter of the 19th century still has its original hinges. The door latches have been replaced. Also the bottom panel has been made into drawers - again to increase its utility. The original panel has now become the drawer fronts. I think one of the spandrels has also been replaced. This chest will be sure to appeal to the "buy it ratty, and leave it alone" crowd.
