First Pair Of Elm "Lamp Hanger" Chairs
How I wish I had a set of six of these chairs. I have to be content with only a pair. But what a pair! They are beautifully refinished elm, originated in either Shanxi or Hebei provinces, and have a spectacularly simple curved back splat. It is obvious how they derived their name. The extended top crest rail suggests that a lamp could be hung from either of the "ears." I doubt that lamps were used that way, but the style is simply spectacular. Note the picture frame molded seat and the 3-piece shaped apron between the chair seat and the footrest. These chairs date from the 1st quarter of the 20th century, and have age related repairs. Height of seat is 20".
