Gold Gift and Black Lacquer Scholar's Sign

What can I say about this sign? Visually striking, I don't believe the gold has been redone, but I do think the black has been repainted. A great size the figurative translation is "A Flower's Blossom Glorifies its Beauty." I think the sign is meant to compare someone's peak achievement to a flower's blossom.
