The Chinese used these racks to hold their clothes. This is a particularly nice example of the style. The top of the rack has the "fungus of immortality" carved at its ends. Throughout the rack, many fortuitous symbols are carved, suggesting various aspects of "good fortune." This rack is beautifully carved, and quite useful. I have seen racks such as this used as room dividers. I have also seen them used in bedrooms with the same function for which they were built. This rack is made of various wood types, most probably in Shanxi province about 100 years ago, and does have some age appropriate repairs particularly to the base.
