This magnificent bench has it's original paint with a clear overcoat. In addition to retaining much of it's original color, it's most outstanding characteristic are the "ruyi" shaped feet. In China the "ruyi" is a "what ever one wishes" wand. Pictures of ruyi can be found in many books, and the carving of the legs is highly symbolic representation of "what ever one hopes for." This elm bench from Yunnan Province dates from the last few years of the 19th century.
