Small Stool

This elm stool was made most probably in Hebei province in the middle of the 20th century.  It has had some repairs to its apron. This stool is so traditionally Chinese that this form is found in stools this size and much larger benches.  The form is typical: a rectangular quite thick top supported by four legs with a considerable splay and the top and legs joined by an apron, or alternatively in other benches, by apron wings around the legs.  I love the form, and one finds it in various woods, and various states of repair or as the case may be, dis-repair!
