A "Mongolian type" chest is a relatively narrow chest with two drawers over a pair of doors. Rarely can one find a chest with completely original paint. Usually the paint has been touched up, or parts of the chest completely repainted, or the chest has been completely refinished. This elm chest has original paint on the drawers and doors, but most of the paint on the rest of the chest is not original. The interior shelf has been replaced as well as the hardware and it has age appropriate repairs. The chest originated either in Inner Mongolia or Shanxi province, and probably was made in the first quarter of the 20th century.
