China is rapidly transforming its cities to contain very modern high rise buildings. As a result, older houses are frequently razed to make room for the new construction. Many items are being rescued from these houses. Included in the items rescued are doors and windows - often with open lattice work on the top. These items are magnificently made and the designs in the lattice work varied and often skillfully carved and highly symbolic. They hint at the beauty and grandeur of the houses from which they came.
Often presented as gifts, signs are frequently displayed on the walls of Chinese houses. They can commentate a birthday, or some auspicious occasion. In their own right, they are often magnificent art, with fine calligraphy and superb carving. Westerners usually display them as one would hang a picture of which one is particularly proud.
