First Stacking Chest

This stacking set of drawers is made of poplar.  An interesting concept is shown here.  The drawers have "lips" that keep them from sliding off the stack, and the whole stack is contained in a rack to add further stability.  Yet in a curious way, this set can be picked up by the top of the rack and moved quite easily.  This is truly a unique Chinese design.  Made in Shandong province in the last quarter of the 19th century, this chest combines storage, style, and portability all in one. Depth of base is 19.5". Dimensions are approximate.
