This elm box has its original paint (over coated), and came from Shanxi province. In China, boxes of this type made from one of the Ming era's hardwoods such as Zitan or Huanghuali, would sell for many thousands of dollars. There would be furious bidding from Chinese nationals as well as western collectors. Yet here sits the same type of box, made with a much more frequently found elm wood, and with only about 100 years of age. What a difference wood type and age mean in the sales price!
