Notice the carving between the legs. It resembles the "Lingzhi" or "Fungus of immortality." Regardless the the symbolism, the table is beautifully made, with everted flanges that rise 2" above the top of the table. When I first saw this table, I thought it was one of the most beautiful and graceful Altar tables that I had seen on the market. Country furniture yes, but like so much country furniture, its design is classical, its construction superb, and it works for the modern household. I feel very fortunate to have it in my inventory. Circa 1800.
