Gourd Shaped Shop Sign

This small shop sign has been repainted and the original lettering obscured. The shape of the sign suggests both fertility (gourds have many seeds) and immortality, and is reputed to contain the elixir of immortality. Fujien Province - Qing Dynasty - Guanghu (1870-1908)
