Brush Holder
Chinese brush holders or brush pots, as their name suggests, were used to hold calligraphy brushes. As the size of the brushes varies considerably, so does the size of the pots. Often very well made, this holder can serve as an elegant waste basket. Made of poplar in Shanxi province in the first quarter of the 20th century, it is made by hollowing out a tree. It still retains some of the marks from construction, and to my eye is a visual delight. A brush pot of this size made in Huanghuali wood would be priced at several thousand dollars, even if one were lucky enough to find an equivalent size.
