Second Poplar And Rosewood Stool
This stool was made of Chinese poplar and rosewood in the second quarter of the 20th century most probably in Zhejiang Province. Please look carefully at the construction of this stool. The feet are cuffed, and are joined by a humpbacked stretcher. In the apron right above the stretcher is a carved bat. As many of you know, the bat is a symbol for good fortune in Chinese. Unlike in the west where the bat is feared or viewed as a bad omen, the Chinese consider the bat to be associated with the five elements of good fortune or "Fu." Frequently used in furniture, the carved bat gives blessings to the owner. Above the apron is a molded waist supporting a picture frame molded top with the rosewood inset panel. A most sophisticated and charming piece of country furniture.
