Nan Wood Table

Nan wood is prized in China for its resistance to rot.  Frequently moisture damages furniture legs, and can encourage insect damage.  Nan is one of the most resistant woods to such things.  This table was made in Fujian Province around the turn of the 19th century, and has a classically simple design.  Note the cuffed feet joined by hump back stretchers with struts supporting the apronm above which is a waist and a picture frame molded top.  This table has beautiful proportions.  Also, the apron is carved with bats - the classical Chinese symbol of good fortune known as "Fu." This is a wonderful example of Chinese country furniture.
