Northern Elm (Yumu) Hall Table

Those of you who have been paying attention to styles of Chinese furniture will notice that this table with its heavily carved apron is more reminiscent of Qing design than Ming. There is a substantial reduction in the width of the legs from the top to the bottom which - along with the half moon shape of the lower part of the apron give this table both a square and a moon shaped look. That is what makes the table architecturally interesting from my point of view. Yes the carving is great, but the suggestion of roundness within the rectangle sets it apart. I think the paint has been re-done. Early 20th century.
