Second Coffee Table
There were no coffee tables in China. However, as the demand for such tables has increased particularly in the West, square Baxian tables have been skillfully cut down in height so that they function well as coffee tables. It is important to note however, that these all started off life as taller tables. This one was reduced in size so that the beautiful apron was retained as were the cuffed feet. This table was made from Southern Elm (Jumu) in Zhejiang Province in the first quarter of the 20th century. The rattan top is replaced, and rests on a solid wood under layer, so the surface is strong and firm.
